MILOKAN’s mission is to provide residency opportunities in Jacmel, Haiti to artists who demonstrate a commitment to reimagining a positive future for Haiti. While in residence, artists teach children's’ workshops, connecting children to master teaching artists-in-residence, to develop children's creativity and skill, through instruction, inspiration and mentorship.
MILOKAN’s vision is to catalyze revolution in individuals and communities through creative expression, in order to create positive imaginative futures in Haiti
MILOKAN is named for a veve – a symbol used in vodou as a beacon to call lwa (spirit) to descend to earth. The Milokan veve is a revolutionary and unifying veve, encompasses all the lwa, and was used by the Haitian people to liberate themselves from enslavement. Today Haiti’s struggle for liberation continues, one aspect of which is educating the children so they can imagine a future where corruption, greed and violence don’t rule the mind.
